Cannot find the meaning of "~" (followed by a particular file name).
This appearspreceding one file name in list of spreadsheets, and the same file name also appears without the "~".So far as I can tell the files are exactly the same; no differences noted. In addition to knowing the meaning, will appreciate where I should have gone to find it, presumably somewhere inMicrosoft. Not in FAQs and SEARCH brought no responses. Thanks for help! 1 person got this answerI do too

You have your system set to show hidden files (Folder Options>View tab). The files with a tilde ("~") in front of them are temporary files. MS Office programs like Word and Excel make a temporary file as they are working. The temporary files are supposed to get cleared out when you close the program but sometimes they don't. The real file - the one you work from - is the one without the tilde.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
